Many homeowners who have a boiler to heat their home wonder if it is possible to also have air conditioning. After all, it’s nice to have a warm and comfortable home when the weather turns cold, but cool air during the hottest days of summer is also a welcome relief. Fortunately, if you have a boiler in your home, it is still possible to have the cooling comfort of air conditioning. In fact, there are now several options available for homes with no duct work.
The first option is a mini split ductless system. This type of system has an air handler conveniently built into a wall, while the condenser unit is located outside, which helps ensure quiet operation. Additionally a mini split system is often used to cool specific areas of your home, so you’ll likely want to have multiple air handlers for different rooms. Fortunately, the outside condenser unit will be able to handle multiple air handlers, so keeping a living area and bedrooms cool at the same time is certainly possible. These ductless systems typically cost approximately $3,500 for the condenser unit and a single air handler. Additional air handlers will add to the cost.
Another excellent option when you don’t have a duct system is to choose an attic air system. This type of cooling system utilizes a condenser unit that is located outside as well as an air handler which is installed in the attic. The attic air system will have duct work that will be installed and will run to various areas of your home. Unlike the mini split ductless system, this cooling system can generally cool your entire home.
The latest technology for an attic air system is a high velocity system. Like traditional attic air systems, the high velocity system has an outdoor condenser unit and an attic air handler, but instead of conventional duct work running through your home to bring cool air to each location, the high velocity system uses round tubing that is much smaller than rigid ducts. This tubing allows installation without causing issues with the construction or cosmetic elements of your home. There is typically less temperature variance with a high velocity system, so even cooling adds more comfort.
