As summer slowly approaches, many homeowners will want to check their homes in order to make sure that all of the appropriate equipment is functioning as it should be. This includes the central air conditioner, which is vital to keeping the home cool and comfortable during the hotter months to come. However, as these units age and are used more frequently, they may begin to develop problems, ones that will need to be diagnosed immediately in order to make sure that the life of the unit itself is not threatened. Sometimes the central air conditioner needs charged, while other times there may be a mechanical error with the parts. No matter what the problem, however, taking the time to check on the unit can help you save a lot of money on potentially large utilities and repair bills. By following these next few simple diagnostic procedures, you will be able to better tell if your air conditioner needs to be serviced.
In order to begin the process, you will need to turn your air conditioner off, checking thermostat readings to make sure that they are set at sixty five. After you have changed the setting, wait fifteen minutes to see if you feel any change in the temperature inside of your home. If you do not feel any changes, or if you feel as though the house may be getting warmer, then you have a problem with the air conditioner that will need to be looked into.
To make sure that the problem is not with the fan, you will need to turn your air conditioner back on and step outside to look at the exterior of the unit. If you see that the fan does not turn, then the problem may be with the internal motors. If this is the case, make sure that you do not touch the inside of the fans, and turn off the unit to continue your inspection.
If the fan is functioning properly, then the problem may be centered around the thermostat itself. With the unit off, check to see if your home feels colder than it does outside. If the way that your home feels does not match up with what you found by checking thermostat readings, then the problem is with the thermostat. A broken thermostat will need to be repaired by a professional, as most homeowners are not equipped to solve the issue themselves.
If you find that the thermostat is working properly, then it can be a good idea to check the vents next. Facing the vent that carries the cold air into the home, place your hand in front of it and check if the air feels warm. If it does, you may need to have your unit freon charged in order to have it functioning properly again. This can be easily performed by a trained technician, and calling the appropriate experts to inspect your air conditioning unit will ensure that you are properly equipped to enjoy a more comfortable home during the summer.
